Psychology Discussion Questions
The key phenomena considered in Holmes study circumvent in the ability of migrants in the United States with poor health benefits. At the same time, it tries to connect these processes with the escalation of poverty lines within these groups. These apparent trends become the motivation of the author to look into these situations closely and analyze what prompts and links all these issues altogether.
To determine these trends, Holmes uses a participant observation and interviews among clinics within migration groups in America and Mexico. Seeing this, it can be argued that his role as a researcher circumvents in the collection of data and analyzing inputs from interviews to his main problem and objectives. In particular, it included 130 farm workers and 30 clinicians who have been asked corresponding questions concerning the overall standing and conditions of living within these environments (Holmes, 2004).
Looking at the approach in analyzing the data, it can be seen that he was able to synthesize these accordingly that these groups operated within a hierarchy where citizenship and ethnicity mattered. Pinning down racism and anti-immigrant policies as the source of this illustrates a viable approach in explaining such scenarios from happening. Given these, the study then coincided with the original hypothesis of the author that there are indeed traces of racism (both direct and indirect) that have affected the capacity of these migrant workers to access sufficient healthcare. At the same time, it was also effective in pointing out anti-immigration policies as another link that supplements this particular aspect.
Evaluating the overall design of the study, it can be seen that it was sufficient in highlighting important inputs and trends that influence such apparent scenarios of migrant workers healthcare systems. However, I do believe that the study can be improved if proper attention was also attributed to other factors such as the capacity and responsibility of landlords or policy implementation related to this one. This is because it particularly restrains the application and analysis mainly to the level of racism and anti-migrant policies. Due to this, it may seem to disregard the overall value and impact other factors contribute to the development or degradation of migrant health care.
