PHILOSOPHICAL ASSUMPTIONS AND VALUES
Established protocol becomes progressively internalized, desires are controlled and personal cultivation becomes the mark of social correctness. Obeying ritual with sincerity makes ritual the most powerful way to cultivate one. Thus Respectfulness, without the Rites, becomes laborious bustle carefulness, without the Rites, becomes timidity boldness, without the Rites, becomes insubordination straightforwardness, without the Rites, becomes rudeness (Analects VIII, 2).One central theme to Confucianism is that of relationships, and the differing duties arising from the different status one held in relation to others as a junior in relation to their parents and elders, and as a senior in relation to their children, younger siblings, students, and others. While juniors are considered to owe strong duties of reverence and service to their seniors, seniors also have duties of benevolence toward juniors. This theme consistently manifests itself in many aspects of East Asian culture up to this day, with strong filial duties on the part of the children toward parents and elders, and great concern of parents toward their children. Loyalty is the equivalent of filial piety on a different level, between ruler and minister. In later times, however, emphasis was placed more on the obligations of the ruled to the ruler, and less on the rulers obligations to the ruled.()Another great Eastern philosophy is Taoism which is adhered by the ancient Chinese and spread through Asia. When you try to define Taoism, you immediately run into trouble. The great Taoist philosopher and author of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu, begin his first chapter with the warning words, The Tao that can be described is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name.()In a higher meaning, the Tao refers to the way of the universe, the way things are. As a spiritual system, the Tao means the way of achieving a true understanding of the nature of mind and reality, to the way of living in harmony with Nature. Thus the Tao is the goal, the path and the journey all in one.
Therefore a Taoist then, is a follower of the Way, the same title by which the early Buddhists and Christians also called themselves. In the movie, Lion King, both philosophies were very much present. Filial piety was shown when reverence of Simba to his father manifested in most of the scenes, in which being one in nature and sensitive to the signs being given by the universe through circumstances that occur.Part 3.In this day and age, one might think that heshe has lost hisher individuality. We are all bombarded by the media with advancement in technology. The gap between rich and poor has become smaller in most nations. This was brought about by technology enjoyed by both sides. Equality is being realized in the 21st century as manifested in the consciousness of people in this age.
The promise of a good life is being realized in so many ways except for the circumstances that we destroy nature. But if consciousness among people continues to emerge, having heaven on earth is not far from happening. In the time of mass culture, in this sense, individuality can still be achieved by taking up your own beliefs, and having a stand on your own assumptions. Philosophy can play an important part in this case it can actually make you identify what you believe in, and gain a critical look upon other ways of thinking. Like in the film Howls Moving Castle, where problems of identity and individuality are presented in fantasy form, philosophy is still powerful in the 21st century, especially in further analyzing the recent developments in mans thinking.
