Non-violence

Non-violence has been preached for centuries for the welfare of the mankind and has stressed importance for establishing peace and harmony between human beings. Many great leaders have such asMartin Luther, Mahatma Gandhi, Dalai Lama and many others have stressed its importance and have practiced it. Eye for an Eye, tooth for tooth is not the solution for all conflict and fights should be resolved peacefully is the idea behind Non-violence. Show your other cheek is not always the solution for achieving peace is what Walter Wink says in his book Jesus and nonviolence-The third way. Most of the people and the government in the world in the early times would resort to meaningless resistance where people would accept the injustice and oppressions from the rulers. Peace should be attained in a manner that justice wins over injustice in a non violent fashion and the sayings of Jesus such as Do not resist one who is evil will have meaning.

He has put forth the three ideas of Jesus and has explained the real meaning.the three ideas areturning your other cheek, if somebody sues you for your outer garment, give your undergarment as well. Walter wink has tried to outline the real meaning of these sayings by Jesus. He showed the third way in which he says about how to deal with the sayings of Jesus. He tells when Jesus says show turn your other cheek is not to simply to resist violence and let the opponent take all over you. Its resisting the enemy non violently by turning the other cheek as the enemy should use his back hand to hit on your right cheek where back hand symbolizes putting you back in your position. So its clear that when somebody tries to humiliate you show the other cheek and get back to your position non violently.

In the same way Walter has explained the other sayings of Jesus and has finally confirmed that one has to fight against violence but non violently and do not let somebody take over you and you keep silent and bear oppressions and injustice in the name of practicing Non-violence.In the chapter 5 Walter has explained the use of nonviolence in the social and political struggle. He has discussed about love our enemies, respect for rule of  law, rooting out the non violence etc. Enemies are also the creatures of God and even the sun rises upon them. The enemies will also have God inside them and they know what they are doing is right or wrong. When we hate enemies its like denying the God in them. Love for enemies is essential for the survival of human race in the age of terror. Anybody can transformed from evil good and must not hate the evil person but the evil in him. One must be given a chance for transformation and God always forgives and forgets evil. Walter wink has said Gods forgiving love can burst like a flare even in the night of our grief and hatred, and free us to love. It is in just such times as these, when forgiveness seems impossible, that the power of God most mightily manifests itself.Non-violent revolutions should not be to seize power but for the peaceful transformation forpeaceful transformation of power. Finally rooting out the violence is firstly rooting out the violence with in us.Walter saysIt means abandoning one of the greatest and oldest lies that the world is made up of good people and bad people.

We need to practice non violence but should not accept the injustice and oppressions but fight back against it in a non violent way. Forgive our enemies should be our motto and give them a chance to transform as they are also the creatures of God. In this way we can give non-violence and the sayings of Jesus and other leaders a new meaning.
